  3. Fix all of your assignments that need fixing by Friday Dec 13th
  • I will be available in my room during lunch and advisory through Friday.
  • All of the Adaptive Curriculum assignments (except for "Cell Transport" & "Respiration & photosynthesis") have been reassigned as needed.  If you don't like a quiz grade, you can re-do it.  Please fill out the form below when you finish an assessment (this will make it so much easier to update the gradebook regularly)

Happy Thanksgiving Break

Today there is a lot of clean up to do

  • last observation of plates (make sure you are writing your observations in your data table)
    • put plates into bleach water in the sink to clean
  • last observation of egg
    • Observe the egg (measure and record mass) as well as the water it is in -- is there more or less water, what does it look like?
    • put egg into ziploc baggie to dispose of, clean beaker and put away
  • General clean up of your area

Go to adaptivecurriculum.com
Remember your log on is
puhsmt-ID#

Complete the cell transport activities.
Your notes (use the activity sheet to guide you) should go on the following pgs
101-102 Diffusion
103-104 Osmosis
105-106 Structure and Function of Cell membrane

Also, don't forget about previous adaptive curriculum work.  If you are not happy with a quiz result, let me know and I can reassign that activity to you so that you can retake the quiz.

Egg lab pgs 96-98

Egg lab goes on pgs 96-98
You should have observations as well as predictions on pg 96, data table on pg 97, and conclusion on pg 98.  The lab will run from Friday through next Wednesday.
Click here for the lab in its entirety.

Starch Iodine Lab pg 99-100

Starch Iodine Lab pg 99

What will happen in this scenario?

Prediction:
What will happen after 24 hours?

Procedures:
1.
2.
3.
etc
Pg 100 Data Table for Starch Iodine Lab

Starting Color
Color after 24 hours
Solution in Beaker
(Iodine Solution)
Amber (looks like apple juice)
Lighter yellow
Solution in Bag
(Starch solution)
White opaque (looks like milk)
Starch has settled to the bottom of the bag, after mixing, light purple-greyish opaque solution

Conclusion (also on pg 100) Answer the following questions in a paragraph
  • Based on your observations, which substance moved, the iodine or the starch? How did you determine this?
  • The plastic baggie was permeable to which substance?
  • Is the plastic baggie selectively permeable?
  • Sketch the cup and baggie as part of your conclusion paragraph. Use arrows to illustrate how diffusion occurred in this lab.
  • What would happen if you did an experiment in which the iodine solution was placed in the baggie, and the starch solution was in the beaker? Be detailed in your description.

5 second rule pt 2 update

Your second run at the 5 second rule should go on pgs 92-95
Please remember to follow the lab rubric for all of the parts of the lab.  I will be carefully reading all conclusions for this lab and grading according to the rubric.

This will be graded after Thanksgiving break (so you have break to write your conclusion)

5 second rule, part 2

Run the experiment you planned on Tuesday.
We will leave it for the weekend to grow and see results on the block day next week!

More Cell Info

Work on the following pages today (Thursday).  We will run the experiment tomorrow.

We will put the pages into your notebook on Friday as well.

The packet goes on pg 91 (leave 90 blank).
It contains the following pages.

Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cell review

Cell Structure and Function

Cell Parts

Laura's experiment

Before we run our experiment, let's look at another bacterial experiment.
What can you learn from Laura's experiment? How might you change your experiment because of what you have learned?
Laura's experiment goes on pg 88, your answers on pg 89
It might be helpful to draw a picture of the data (6 circles to represent the petri dishes)

Monday, November 11, 2013

5 second rule re-do

Now that you have something growing, what conclusions can you actually draw? (write your conclusion on pg 87 -- remember to use the rubric)

If you could do it over, would you change your procedures?

Guess what?  We get to do it again!! :)

Edit and revise your procedures as needed.  Do you want to team up with another group?  What might be the benefits or draw backs of having a larger group?

We will run the experiment on Friday!

Anything visible yet?

Look at plates again.

Information about microbes and identification goes on pgs 84-85

"Mark up the text" on pg 84 "What are microbes?"

Can you now identify what you have growing?  Data table should be on pg 86.

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

What do you see on your plates?

Is there anything visible yet?
Use dissection scopes to see more!
Discussion of what is seen (if nothing, maybe there will be something tomorrow, usually takes 48-72 hours to see colonies)
Finish up Mammal Video from Friday

Monday, November 4, 2013

5 second rule execution of lab

Gallery walk for others lab designs

What qualities must an experiment have in order to be considered trust-worthy?

What is sterile technique and why might it matter in this lab?

Conduct lab

Finish cell, start 5 second rule

Agenda for the block day

  • Finish up cell coloring and Adaptive curriculum "intro to cell"

  • Notebook check

  • begin 5 second rule

Intro to Cell and Coloring

Continue to work on adaptive curriculum "Intro to Cell" lesson and complete coloring pages.  The cell coloring pages go on the following pgs in the notebook

pgs 74-75 prokaryotic cell
pgs 76-77 animal cell
pgs 78-79 plant cell

The second activity in the "Intro to Cell" lesson from adaptive curriculum goes on pgs 80-81.  You should have the following questions answered on those pages as well as the table of the cell parts/functions & locations

Doing the Activity Object
  1. What agents/organelles only work in Greencity?
  2. Complete the following chart:
Cell Structure
Function
Found in Plant cells, Animal cells, or Both
Mitochondria
Breaks down food molecules and uses the glucose to supply energy to the cell
Can be found in both plant and animal cells
Lysosome

Nucleus

Vacuole

Cytoplasm

Ribosome

Cell Wall

Cell Membrane

Endoplasmic reticulum

Golgi Apparatus

Chloroplast

Thinking about the Activity Object

  1. Write 3-5 complete sentences explaining what functions would be affected if the cell membrane becomes damaged.
  2. Based on your knowledge of the various organelles in plant and animal cells, what three organelles do you think are the most important for proper cell functioning? Explain your reasoning.
