What makes a good graph?? (page 29)
Hawk Rabbit Grass conclusion
Per 4
In order to have a sustainable community, there should be more producers than primary consumers and more primary consumers than secondary consumers. Cards were randomply passed out and the beginning populations were 4 hawks, 9 rabbits, & 8 grass. By the 4th generation the grass was extinct. Even though there were 5 hawks & 3 rabbits remaining in generation 5, they would have starved within the next 3 generations.
A stable community needs to be in the shape of a pyramid. Meaning that the population of producers (autotrophs) is the largest, then herbivores or 1st level consumers, then carnivores or 2nd level consumers. In each trophic level, the available energy goes down by a factor of 10.

In order to have a sustainable community, there should be more producers than primary consumers and more primary consumers than secondary consumers. Cards were randomly passed out and the beginning populations were 8 hawks, 6 rabbits, & 9 grass. By the 5th generation the rabbits were extinct. Even though there were 4 hawks in generation 5, they would have starved within the next 2 generations. The grass would have survived indefinitely.

Graphs!
Sorry I am not there today. The pre-school is closed today.
You should discuss at your table your Hawk, Rabbit Grass graphs and then decide what makes a good graph. Please then draw the best graph on a small whiteboard to present to the class tomorrow.
Also, don't forget to check your plants!! They look great!!
We will discuss the graphs tomorrow. If you happen to finish early today, please read an issue of Current Science. Hope to see you tomorrow!
