pg 81 Conclusion questions for allelic frequency lab


Remember this information for the conclusion questions below

NATURAL SELECTION AND ALLELIC FREQUENCY

Evolution can best be described as a change in the number of genes for a trait over time. Natural selection can place pressure on specific phenotypes (brown rabbit or white rabbit). In this activity you will simulate the effects of the eagles preying on the rabbits. In this environment white rabbits (genotype bb) were easiest to spot.

The brown rabbits (BB or Bb) blend in better than the white rabbits, therefore only 25% of the brown rabbits die each generation, whereas 100% of the white rabbits die.

CONCLUSION QUESTIONS 
(USE THESE TO WRITE 2 PARAGRAPHS ON PG 81)

Did either allele disappear? Why or why not?
What does your graph show about allelic frequencies and natural selection? 
What would happen to the allelic frequencies if the number of eagles declined?
What did you learn or find interesting in this lab?
What did you find difficult or hard to understand in this lab?

pgs 82-83 Constructed respose prompts

You will receive 2 constructed response questions.  Please answer one on each page (82 & 83)

You may work with a partner, you will be given some short readings on Lamarck and Darwin to help with one of the prompts.  You will be given 30-40 minutes to complete your responses (Use the generic rubric on the back of the page to help).  You will then be given a content specific rubric to compare your answer to.

pgs 80-81 Allelic Frequency Lab


Procedures
  1. Place 50 dark beans and 50 light beans into the bag. 
  2. Shake the bag. Remove two beans. These represent 1 rabbit’s genotype (BB or Bb or bb).
  3. As you remove pairs of beans, arrange and neatly organize the beans in two columns representing the two possible phenotypes (brown or white).
  4. Examine the columns. Remove 25% (every 4th one) of the brown rabbits and 100% (all) of the white rabbits. 
  5. Count the number of dark beans and white beans remaining. Record data in your data table.
  6. Calculate % of both alleles. Record in your data table.
  7. Begin the next generation by placing 100 beans into the bag. The proportions of beans should be the same as the percentages you calculated in Step 6.
  8. Repeat steps 3 through 8 collecting data for 5 generations 
  9. Graph the % or frequencies for each allele over 5 generations. Use a different color for each allele   (B or b). 
What you need on page 80 (completed with your data) as well as a graph (1 GRAPH 2 LINES) with the % or frequency over 5 generations.  We will complete page 81 next week.

Go through the module with a partner, write down information that you think is important on pages 78-79 including answers to the questions found in the learner journal.

Once you have completed the module take the assessment individually (one person takes it and then logs out of adaptive curriculum, the other person then logs in and takes the assessment)

AIMS prep (Thursday & Friday)

The AIMS science test is next Wednesday April 10th.
To prepare, we are going through the study guide and practice test.  
You can also log-onto study island and there are tutorials there.
Although it isn't required for graduation, you can only take the test once and it goes on your transcript forever.  As long as you take the test seriously and take your time (remember it is un-timed), there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to meet or exceed on this test.

Welcome Back! Protein synthesis activity (pgs 70-71)

We are going to focus this week on DNA's function.  
In groups of three, get a computer
Go to Adaptive Curriculum
I will give you the log-on number to use (it isn't the computer's # this time)
Once logged on, search for DNA
Go through the lesson titled "DNA to Protein Synthesis"
 
Answer the following questions in your notebook on pages 70-71
